CC1101 vs nRF24L01+ for Flipper Zero & M5Stack: Which One Do You Actually Need?

CC1101 and nRF24L01+ show up in the same Flipper Zero and M5Stack RF conversations, but they don't actually compete for the same job.

What the CC1101 does

The CC1101 is a Sub-GHz radio — frequencies below 1 GHz, where a huge amount of everyday wireless lives: garage doors, car key fobs, weather stations, TPMS, smart-home switches, industrial telemetry. A high-gain CC1101 module (with a PA/LNA stage) improves receive sensitivity and transmit reach over the stock internal radio, useful for capturing weak or distant Sub-GHz signals during authorized testing.

Get a CC1101 if you work with 433 / 868 / 915 MHz devices — the vast majority of Sub-GHz remotes and sensors.

What the nRF24L01+ does

The nRF24L01+ works in 2.4 GHz — a band the Flipper Zero has no built-in radio for. It's used by many wireless keyboards/mice and various proprietary 2.4 GHz links. Adding an nRF24L01+ opens research that's simply impossible on stock hardware.

Get an nRF24L01+ if your target is in 2.4 GHz (HID research, proprietary 2.4 GHz protocols).

So which one? (the decision a spec sheet doesn't finish)

A pure spec comparison leaves you stuck choosing. Here's the actual decision:

  • Only ever touching Sub-GHz remotes/sensors? CC1101 alone is enough.
  • Want 2.4 GHz too, or not sure yet? Get both. Because the bands don't overlap, owning one chip leaves a permanent blind spot, and a second board later costs more than a dual board now.

Antennas matter

The two chips need band-matched antennas — a 433 MHz Sub-GHz antenna is not a 2.4 GHz antenna, and the wrong one kills range. Quality dual boards ship the correct antenna for each radio.

Dual-radio modules avoid the permanent blind spot of picking just one chip.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CC1101 better than the nRF24L01+?
No — not comparable. CC1101 = Sub-GHz (300–928 MHz), nRF24 = 2.4 GHz. "Better" depends entirely on the band you need.
Can one chip cover both bands?
No. CC1101 can't reach 2.4 GHz; nRF24 can't reach Sub-GHz. To cover both, you need both chips — hence dual-radio modules.
Does the Flipper Zero already have these?
It has a built-in (limited) Sub-GHz radio, but no 2.4 GHz radio. A CC1101 module extends Sub-GHz; an nRF24 adds the missing 2.4 GHz band.
Which CC1101 frequency — 433, 868, or 915 MHz?
433 MHz is most common worldwide; 868 MHz common in the EU; 915 MHz in North America. Match your region and target devices.
