Picking the right "CC1101 cap" for your Cardputer or StickC comes down to two decisions: matching your exact M5Stack model, and choosing single-band Sub-GHz versus dual-band Sub-GHz + 2.4 GHz coverage.
What does "cap" mean here?
In the M5Stack community, a "cap" (or "hat") is a hardware module that attaches directly to a device's header — no wiring, no breadboard. A CC1101 cap is therefore a ready-to-use Sub-GHz radio module that snaps onto your M5Stack device and is recognized by firmware like Bruce.
You'll see it written several ways — "cap cc1101", "CC1101 cap", "RF cap", "Hydra RF cap" — they all refer to the same category of snap-on Sub-GHz module.
What a CC1101 cap actually does
The CC1101 is a Sub-GHz transceiver. It operates below 1 GHz — in practice the 315 / 433 / 868 / 915 MHz bands where most everyday wireless devices live: garage doors, car key fobs, weather stations, TPMS, smart-home switches. A CC1101 cap lets your Cardputer or StickC receive and transmit in these bands for authorized RF research and learning.
A quality cap adds a PA/LNA amplifier stage (better range and receive sensitivity than a bare breakout) and a properly tuned antenna for the Sub-GHz band.
CC1101-only vs CC1101 + nRF24 cap — which do you need?
This is the decision most buyers get wrong. There are two kinds of "CC1101 cap":
