2.4 GHz Is Enough: Why Beginners Shouldn't Pay for an ESP32-C5 5 GHz Flipper Board Yet (2026)

A wave of $99 ESP32-C5 "5 GHz" boards launched for the Flipper in 2026. Before you spend, here's what actually works today — and why a cheap 2.4 GHz board covers almost all of it.
The 2026 "5 GHz for Flipper" hype
5 GHz on the Flipper Zero used to be impossible with a plain ESP32 (2.4 GHz only). In 2026 that changed on paper, with several boards:
- ESP32 Marauder 5G "Apex 5" — ESP32-C5 + dual Sub-GHz (433/868) + nRF24 + GPS, ~$99, released Feb 2026.
- Rabbit-Labs ESP32-C5 multi-board — dual-band Wi-Fi 6, CC1101, GPS, SD.
- Double Barrel 5G — reaches 5 GHz via an RTL8720DN companion chip.
Impressive hardware. But hardware capability and working software are two different things.
The catch: 5 GHz attacks are still unstable in 2026
The ESP32-C5 does have a 5 GHz radio, and Marauder now runs on C5 boards with early 5 GHz scan and deauth. The keyword is early:
- 5 GHz deauth on C5 is tracked as crashing or having no effect in the project issue trackers through mid-2026 — e.g. a Bruce firmware report of Wi-Fi target attacks not working on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
- 5 GHz is "no longer unique to any one tool," but across implementations it remains the least mature part of the stack.
Translation: you can pay $99 for a 5 GHz-capable board and still find the 5 GHz attacks you bought it for don't reliably fire yet. (Note: C5 scanning and GPS wardriving are a different story — more on that below.)
What beginners actually do — and it's all 2.4 GHz
Every core first-year Flipper Wi-Fi technique is 2.4 GHz:

The one thing an ESP32-S2 board can't do is GPS wardriving — but that's a GPS limitation, not a 5 GHz one, and it applies to the official board too.
